Latest bizarre conspiracy theory: Hafez Assad sold the Golan to Israel

Nuttiness at Albawaba:

Dr. Mahmoud Jame', a close friend to late Egyptian President Anwar Sadat has recently raised an interesting issue when he said that Sadat was briefed on the secret that the Golan Heights were actually sold to Israel in ahead of the 1967 War in exchange for US$100 million. Dr. Jame', a member of the first Consultative Council in Egypt, and author of the book "I Knew Sadat", said that the money was received by Rifaat al-Assad and his brother Hafez Assad, the former Syrian president. The check was deposited in a Swiss bank.

Jame' went on to say that, "one morning Sadat took me with him in private and without a guard to the (Syrian part of the) Golan Heights, and I swear by the Almighty God that he put his hand on my shoulder and as we were standing on the Golan Heights, he told me literally: Look Mahmoud. This is the Golan, can any power seize it so easily, even if it is Israel?" And Jame' said, "I said to Sadat this is impossible, he said to me I will tell you a dangerous secret, the Golan Heights were purchased by Israel for $100 million. The check was received by both Hafez and Rifaat al-Assad and deposited in their accounts in a Swiss bank."

The price in return was that Syrian Defense Minister at the time, Hafez Assad, order the Syrian forces to withdraw immediately from the Golan Heights in the June 1967 war without firing a single shot and handing it over to Israel. "This story and my testimony of this event, has been kept secret for many years until 1999, when I alluded in the book "I Knew Sadat" to the incident without revealing the full details. In 2006, when I was hosted by Almihwar channel, I provided the full details frankly, to the extent that even Moataz was stunned," the Egyptian writer said.

"The next day, Almihwar hosted Mr. Amin Gemayel, Lebanon's former president, and the subject was raised with him. He supported my words. Then the Beirut-based Future channel tried to invite me to Beirut to discuss the subject, but I apologized, and refused," he added.

Syrian sources dismiss the Egyptian writer's claims. They claim this "baseless" story is part of a smear campaign against the Assad regime.

So Syria withdrew from the Golan without firing a shot? Who knew?

I wonder how much Damascus would cost.

Damascus? Isaiah 17. It's a bad investment

The most hostile country in the European Union

Labels:
(Israel Matzav) If you had asked me who is the most hostile country to Israel in the European Union, I would have bet on Sweden. Maybe France. But it's neither of those. Two and a half years ago, my friend Dymphna posted a lengthy post about anti-Semitism in Ireland. And since then it has only gotten worse.
An outrageous anti-Israel display was held over the weekend on Dublin's main pedestrian street, presenting IDF soldiers as Nazi troops.
As part of the display, sponsored by the Dublin City Council, a group of pro-Palestinian activists set up a model of the separation fence and an IDF roadblock.
The activists dressed up as soldiers and beat, humiliated and pointed their weapons at other activists dressed as Palestinians, in front of thousands of Irish citizens and tourists.
The display joins accusations voiced against Israel at the Irish parliament last week, on the backdrop of claims that Israel "kidnapped", abused and undressed Irish nationals who took part in a Gaza-bound flotilla stopped by the Israeli army recently.
Israel has strongly denied the accusations.
But that's not all. A Facebook group launched about two months ago called for heavy rocks to be thrown at the Israeli Embassy building in Dublin. Anti-Israel elements recently vandalized a Dublin auditorium slated to host a concert by Israeli singer Izhar Ashdot.
The Facebook accounts of Israeli Embassy officials have been attacked by Irish hackers and, in addition, anti-Israeli elements are attempting to disrupt an Israeli film festival organized by the embassy in Dublin next week.
"The Irish government is feeding its people with anti-Israel hatred," an Israeli official argued. "What we are seeing here is clear anti-Semitism."
Another country to cross off your summer vacation list. Dymphna reports that Ireland has a long history of this kind of behavior.
When you read these awful Israel-condemning debates in the Irish Senate, remember that Ireland is a country that was neutral during the Holocaust, that sent condolences to Germany on the death of Hitler, and that refused to allow almost any Jewish refugees in, either before, during or after the war. I don’t at all think the Irish politicians are anti-semitic. Rather, they have a range of trendy reasons for their views. But I think Ireland - like most of Europe - should shut up about Jews for a few hundred years.
Indeed.
I feel it a bit in the American Irish community as well. It is shrouded in radical politics, but it is there. That said... there are some Irish Americans who have become part of the Anti-Jihad crowd. Many of Irish blood in New York lost loved ones during 911, but I still feel it is an unstable alliance with Jews. My son is part Irish. It is always kind of there. I wish it were not.

Time to rehabilitate Portugal’s Dreyfus

Labels: » »
by Michael Freund, The Jerusalem Post (h/t IsraPundit) This year marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of an unsung Jewish hero, Captain Arthur Carlos de Barros Basto. His exploits extended from the battlefields of World War I to the struggle to reclaim crypto-Jewish identity, but this intrepid figure met a cruel and unwarranted end at the hands of Portugal’s dictatorial regime. Despite the passage of so many decades, the injustice committed against him cries out for resolution. The time has come to give this man his due. Barros Basto came from a family of Bnei Anusim (whom historians refer to by the derogatory term “Marranos”), descendants of Jews whose ancestors had been forced to convert to Catholicism in the 15th century. Raised a Catholic, he went on to become a decorated soldier who commanded a Portuguese infantry company in World War I, where he fought in the trenches of Flanders and took part in the allied offensive to liberate Belgium. After the war Barros Basto decided to re-embrace the faith of his forefathers. He studied Judaism intensively, then traveled to Spanish Morocco in December 1920 to undergo a formal return to the Jewish people before a rabbinical court. Back in Portugal, Barros Basto settled in the northern city of Oporto, where he launched a public campaign to persuade other Bnei Anusim to return to their roots. Donning his military uniform and medals, he traveled among the towns and villages of Portugal’s interior, giving rousing speeches, conducting Jewish services and seeking to inspire others to follow his example. After centuries of hiding, thousands of Bnei Anusim answered his call and tentatively agreed to join his movement. Barros Basto turned to world Jewry for help, and succeeded in raising the necessary funds to build the magnificent Mekor Haim synagogue, which still stands in Oporto. He opened a yeshiva that operated for nine years, where dozens of young Bnei Anusim learned about Jewish life and lore. He also single-handedly produced a Jewish newspaper, Halapid (the Torch), and was responsible for the publication of numerous books on Jewish history and law in Portuguese. BUT HIS open identification with Judaism, and the thousands of people whom he touched, did not sit well with the government or with Church authorities. They sought to quell his nascent movement by bringing him up on charges connected to the practice of the Jewish religion. On June 12, 1937, the Superior Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Army concluded that Barros Basto lacked the “moral capacity” to serve in its ranks. And just what exactly was his “crime”? Incredibly, the military council declared that Barros Basto had “performed the operation of circumcision of several students pursuant to a precept of the Israelite religion he professes” and said that he was excessively affectionate toward his pupils. As a result, they summarily drummed him out of the armed forces, destroyed his career and sullied his name. This brought about an end to his efforts to reawaken Portugal’s Bnei Anusim, many of whom saw the treatment meted out to Barros Basto as a sign that the authorities would not tolerate their return to Judaism. In 1961, he died, a broken man. Stripped of his rank and publicly humiliated because he was a Jew, Barros Basto has been likened by historians such as Cecil Roth to Alfred Dreyfus, the French general staff officer who was convicted of treason on trumped-up charges in 1894 and drummed out of the military. But unlike Dreyfus, Barros Basto has yet to receive the exoneration he deserves. Once Portugal began its transition to democracy in 1975, his family appealed to the authorities to rectify the situation, but their pleas fell on deaf ears. For the past decade, Shavei Israel, the organization I chair, has been involved in the Barros Basto case. Over the years, we elicited support from American Jewish organizations such as the Conference of Presidents, the Orthodox Union and the Religious Zionists of America, all of whom have written to the Portuguese ambassador to Washington about the matter. Last month, on October 31, there was an important new development. With the help of an attorney, the captain’s granddaughter, Isabel Maria de Barros Lopes, submitted a formal request to the president of the Portuguese parliament seeking her grandfather’s posthumous reinstatement into the military. Isabel told me that she is determined to see things through. Just like her grandfather, she is not afraid to fight for what is right. But more pressure must be brought to bear on Portuguese officials. Contact your local Portuguese embassy or sign the petition online to the leader of the Portuguese parliament. We must garner as much international support as possible to bring closure to this painful chapter. Barros Basto was a courageous figure who stood up for the Jewish people, defying the powers that be to help his brethren. He was a victim of anti-Semitism, so how can we remain silent? Several years ago, in the northern Portuguese village of Amarante, I entered the local cemetery and stood before Barros Basto’s simple and unadorned grave. Then and there, I made a promise to do what I could to restore his honor and bring about justice. There is now an unprecedented opportunity to do so and we must not let it pass. The stain on this noble man’s name is also a stain on Portugal itself, and it is time for it to be removed, once and for all. Rehabilitate the Portuguese Dreyfus and let justice be done, so that his soul may finally rest in peace.

“Avenue Jew” Comes to Flatbush

Labels: » »
{Noam Amdurski / Matzav} Brooklyn, NY - Less than a week after an arson and hate crime in Flatbush, Brooklyn, which resulted in the torching and burning of several automobiles, as well as anti-Semitic graffiti, vandals have struck again, this time defacing the Avenue J subway sign by adding the letters “EW,” so that the station name reads “Avenue JEW.” A concerned constituent who saw the grafittied sign while on the train snapped a photo and contacted Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn). The Transit Police have since removed the sign and are investigating this incident as a bias crime. “Education and vigilance are our only weapons in fighting against this blatant hatred,” said Hikind. “We must send a message to those who perpetrate these vile acts that we will not tolerate their behavior. These cowards need to know that we will find them wherever they lurk, and when we do, we will prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.” On Tuesday, Hikind announced that the reward money for credible information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for last week’s hate crime had increased to $56,000. Anyone with information relating to that crime is urged to call the New York City Police Department tip hotline at 800.577.TIPS (8477)
Avenue Jew is a lot less threatening then J Street. That wasn't a joke.

Ayn Rand on "Civil Disobedience"

Wait, where’s Community?!
(BLACKBOOK)Wait, where’s Community?!
(AtlasShrugs2000) Civil Disobedience Ayn Rand
Civil disobedience may be justifiable, in some cases, when and if an individual disobeys a law in order to bring an issue to court, as a test case. Such an action involves respect for legality and a protest directed only at a particular law which the individual seeks an opportunity to prove to be unjust. The same is true of a group of individuals when and if the risks involved are their own.
But there is no justification, in a civilized society, for the kind of mass civil disobedience that involves the violation of the rights of others—regardless of whether the demonstrators’ goal is good or evil. The end does not justify the means. No one’s rights can be secured by the violation of the rights of others. Mass disobedience is an assault on the concept of rights: it is a mob’s defiance of legality as such.
The forcible occupation of another man’s property or the obstruction of a public thoroughfare is so blatant a violation of rights that an attempt to justify it becomes an abrogation of morality. An individual has no right to do a “sit-in” in the home or office of a person he disagrees with—and he does not acquire such a right by joining a gang. Rights are not a matter of numbers—and there can be no such thing, in law or in morality, as actions forbidden to an individual, but permitted to a mob.
The only power of a mob, as against an individual, is greater muscular strength—i.e., plain, brute physical force. The attempt to solve social problems by means of physical force is what a civilized society is established to prevent. The advocates of mass civil disobedience admit that their purpose is intimidation. A society that tolerates intimidation as a means of settling disputes—the physical intimidation of some men or groups by others—loses its moral right to exist as a social system, and its collapse does not take long to follow.
Politically, mass civil disobedience is appropriate only as a prelude to civil war—as the declaration of a total break with a country’s political institutions.

Israel working with Kenya against Islamists

Labels:
(EOZ(h/t Yoel)) From the BBC: Israel has offered to help Kenya secure its borders as it tackles Somalia's Islamist group, al-Shabab, the Kenyan prime minister's office has said. It said Kenya got the backing of Israel to "rid its territory of fundamentalist elements" during Prime Minister Raila Odinga's visit to the country. Last month, Kenya sent troops to neighbouring Somalia to defeat al-Shabab, which is linked to al-Qaeda. It blames the militants for a spate of abductions on its side of the border. In a statement, Mr Odinga's office quotes Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as saying that "Kenya's enemies are Israel's enemies". "We have similar forces planning to bring us down," he is is quoted as saying. "I see it as an opportunity to strengthen ties." At least 15 people were killed in a suicide bombing on an Israeli-owned hotel in the Kenyan coastal resort of Mombasa in 2002. Four years earlier, more than 200 people were killed in co-ordinated bomb blasts on the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. Al-Qaeda carried out the attacks, with some of its senior members operating from Somalia. Mr Odinga - who is accompanied on the visit by Internal Security Minister George Saitoti - said Israel could help Kenya's police force detect and destroy al-Shabab's networks in Kenya. Kenya also needed Israel to provide vehicles for border patrols and equipment for sea surveillance to curb piracy off the East African coast, he said. "We need to be able to convincingly ensure homeland security," Mr Odinga said. The statement quoted Mr Netanyahu as promising to help build a "coalition against fundamentalism" in East Africa, incorporating Kenya, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Tanzania. Israel's President Shimon Peres had promised to "make everything available" to Kenya to guarantee its security within its borders, the statement said. "Consistently, Kenya has shown a very positive attitude towards Israel and Israel is ready to help," the statement quotes Mr Peres saying. Look closely, and you can see the hate dripping from he face of the evil extremist right-wing hawkish racist supremacist Israeli leader. Or at least some people can.
Israel still thinks there is a way to curb antisemitism with positive acts. intervention in other people's wars (even if they are the good guys is a horrible idea). I have no doubt Israel will regret this. you can not save Israel with public relations. Once Israel sends a message that it is willing to bleed for other people... the 3rd world will just want more. At a certain point Israel will have to say no and then Israel will be hated even more. Kenya is capable of defending itself. Moral support is what Israel should be offering. Sending your troops to Africa is a bad move. intervention with the intent of ass hat "Tikkum Olam" is a fail because you create a dependency that when not met will cause hatred. these Israeli public relations stunts in Haiti for example led to further the idea that the Jews came to steal black people's organs... and those ideas were pushed by liberals like Christiane Amanpour on CNN (now on ABC). In the old days Jews were a hefty booty was extortion. Today we are extorted by the public relations culture. Jews can not win this way.

Left-wing Massachusetts law professor calls care packages for troops "shameful"

Labels: » »
He also says that displaying of the American flag in the university atrium is "not a politically neutral act." The problem is, he's a professor. The university administration defends his acts as the "academic freedom".
(h/t Eye/Fox News) A Massachusetts law professor has created a campus firestorm with an email to colleagues that declares it would be "shameful" to send care packages to U.S. troops "who have gone overseas to kill other human beings."
Michael Avery, a professor at Suffolk University Law School, sent a five-paragraph email to colleagues in response to a school-wide appeal for care packages for deployed soldiers, Fox affiliate WFXT-TV reports.
"I think it is shameful that it is perceived as legitimate to solicit in an academic institution for support for men and women who have gone overseas to kill other human beings," Avery wrote.
The professor, who specializes in constitutional law, wrote the email last week in response to a university drive to collect items for U.S. troops, like sunblock and sanitary products. He also wrote that sympathy for American troops in harm's way is "not particularly rational in today's world."
Paul Spera, past commander in chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, blasted Avery's remarks on Monday, calling the professor's argument "despicable."
"The shameful thing is that he’s teaching our young people," Spera told FoxNews.com.
"One of the things that we've learned from Vietnam is to separate the warriors from the war. You can be opposed to the war -- you can disagree with the tactics and the political decision involved -- but the individuals on the battle field are there protecting us," said Spera, an Army veteran who served in Vietnam.
"Somebody has to stand up to this man," he said, noting that the recipients of such care packages are willing to "lay their lives on the line for the freedoms that this man is abusing."
The university has since been inundated with complaints from students and alumni, claiming Avery's view is not representative of the school community.
"I don't think that reflects the overall feelings of Suffolk Law in general," law student Marisa Roman told the station. "Clearly it's a patriotic school; we have a huge American flag up in the atrium."
Avery reportedly takes exception to the flag as well, claiming that its hanging is "not a politically neutral act."
"Excessive patriotic zeal is a hallmark of national security states. It permits, indeed encourages, excesses in the name of national security, as we saw during the Bush administration, and which continue during the Obama administration," he wrote.
Suffolk University president and provost Barry Brown issued a statement saying the school supported the "free exchange of ideas and robust debate" and respected the "right of our faculty members to exercise academic freedom."(More...)

Racists at Reuters still refer to "Arab East Jerusalem"; no mention of why the city was Arab between 1948 & 1967

Labels: » » »
(r-mew) Palestinian Arabs who are not residents of Jerusalem are restricted from riding Israeli buses into the city.  This policy, to protect passengers from the scourge of Arab bus-bombing that killed hundreds of Israelis, foreign tourists and workers during the last Palestinian terror war, was challenged yesterday by a handful of Palestinians referring to themselves with the Orwellian catachresis "freedom riders".
Reuters correspondent Jihan Abdalla, who barely mentions the reason for the travel restrictions, nevertheless gives full voice to the protesters:
"My message is that Israel conducts a racist regime," said protester Badi Dweik before he was dragged off the bus by police at Hizme checkpoint north of Jerusalem.
Dweik said he had been barred from nearby Jerusalem for 12 years while settlers could travel freely to and from the Holy City. Israel captured Arab East Jerusalem in the 1967 war and annexed it as its capital, a move not recognised abroad.
The supreme irony of course, is that Abdalla employs the racist epithet, "Arab East Jerusalem", to describe the city as it was sometimes referred to between 1948 and 1967, a period during which Jews were ethnically cleansed from Jerusalem by the Arabs, barred from living, working, praying, or visiting the city. Predictably, that irony is lost on Abdalla and Reuters.

BGU produces mouse sperm from germ cells in breakthrough

Labels: » » »

(h/t Bat Zion / JPOST) Research group call their in vitro work a “breakthrough” that could eventually help infertile men who cannot produce sperm.

A new technique developed by Ben- Gurion University researchers has generated mouse sperm cells from testicular germ cells in a petri dish. While it will take time to jump to human experimentation, Prof. Mahmoud Huleihel and his research group call their in vitro work a “breakthrough” that could eventually help infertile men who cannot produce sperm, as well as boys before puberty who are at risk of infertility after undergoing aggressive therapies and, at a young age, cannot produce sperm for freezing for later use.

Germ cells give rise to the gametes, which are cells that fuse with other cells in an organism that reproduces sexually.

Huleihel, who is part of the Shraga Segal Department of Microbiology and Immunology in the Faculty of Health Sciences in Beersheba, published an article on the achievement in the Asian Journal of Andrology.

Huleihel and his team, which pioneered the technique, used a threedimensional culture system (SACS) on a bed of agar (processed seaweed) to generate the sperm.

The study was performed in cooperation with Prof. Eitan Lunenfeld at Soroka University Medical Center and Prof.

Stefan Schlatt of the University of Münster in Germany.

The researchers said SACS has the capacity to induce testicular germ cells to reach the final stages of spermatogenesis and have a normal shape. The mice who were experimented on were only seven days old.

Huleihel said that most attempts to culture male germ cells have used twodimensional cell culture systems. But their unique three-dimensional cell culture system using soft agar “is more representative” of natural conditions to which a cell is exposed in an organ. In the past, the three-dimensional SACS has been used to investigate proliferation and differentiation of bone marrow and blood cells in vitro.
