(Politico) ...Walsh is moving forward with his resolution after meeting last month in Israel with Danny Danon, a deputy speaker of the Knesset and Likud Party member known for criticizing Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu from the right. Earlier this year, Danon introduced a bill that would annex all of “Area C,” a large portion of the West Bank [AKA Judea and Samaria] that includes Jewish settlements and rural lands but would spare the largest Palestinian cities. Danon’s now leading a campaign to pressure Netanyahu to move forward with the unilateral annexation. Walsh, who said he’d been considering a similar measure before arriving in Israel in August, confirmed that he and Danon “bounced some ideas off each other” on the resolution. Danon argued in a New York Times op-ed earlier this year that a request from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas [AKA Abu Mazen] for a U.N. statehood declaration would amount to a nullification of the Oslo Accords, which dictate that “neither side shall initiate or take any step that will change the status of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip pending the outcome of the permanent status negotiations.” That means the country would be free to annex unilaterally, he wrote. In the op-ed, Danon downplayed the potential international consequences by pointing to past Israeli annexations as evidence the country could withstand international condemnation.

Mayor Pro Tem / Vice Mayor Claudia Alvarez's comments about paying Hilter

Claudia Alvarez made the comments referring to property owner Irving Chase late last month during a council discussion of a controversial tax on downtown property owners. Chase’s parents are Holocaust survivors from Poland. Alvarez apologized for the comments in a statement last week after the Anti-Defamation League of Orange County/Long Beach, called on her to resign from the council. “At the council meeting, in the midst of built up frustration in the chamber, I inadvertently drew an egregious analogy to Mr. Chase and his son,” she wrote. “I now understand how hurtful and egregious this must have felt to them whose family suffered in the Holocaust.” Alvarez apologized for the comments again Tuesday during a meeting of the council. A motion calling on Alvarez to resign her title, which allows her to run council meetings in the mayor’s absence, was tabled after Councilman Vincent F. Sarmiento offered a substitute motion. That motion condemned the comments and asked the Orange County Human Relations Commission to host a town hall meeting on race relations, which he said was a “proportionate response” to the comments. “The comments she made were clearly in violation of our code of ethics,” Sarmiento said. “This is just one of many incidents that we’ve had not only in the city but in the county that shows there needs to be some sensitivity training.” The motion condemning Alvarez's comments passed on a 4-3 vote.

Shin Bet uncovers Hamas terror cells

A joint Shin Bet, IDF and police operation, which took place over the past few months, has led to the discovery of several Hamas terror cells which were plotting attacks in Israel. According to information obtained by Ynet on Wednesday, only one of the cells was able to carry out its nefarious plan, planting a bomb at the International Convention Center in Jerusalem, in March. One British tourist was killed and 47 people were injured in the attack. A senior Shin Bet official told Ynet that the widespread terror organization was indicative of a concentrated effort by Hamas to rebuild its military infrastructure in Judea and Samaria as means of carrying out attacks against Israeli targets. The infrastructure uncovered, he added, revealed the cooperation within Hamas' own factions, including the participation of overseas Hamas bases and growing attempts to smuggle weapons from the Gaza Strip to Judea and Samaria. The investigation also linked Arrafa to the attack in the International Convention Center in Jerusalem. He admitted his involvement in the case and confessed to planning a second attack – an abduction of an Israeli citizen in the area. The device was discovered at the Ras al-Amud home of a 23-year-old Azhak Arrafa, a resident of east Jerusalem who has an Israeli ID. He was later identified as a Hamas operative. Following Arrafa's arrest, Israeli security forces were able to arrest the would-be suicide bomber, Said Qawasmeh (20), from Hebron. As part of the operation, dozens of Hamas operatives, comprising at least 13 terror cells, were arrested across the West Bank over the past few weeks. Ynet has learnt that the terror attacks thwarted included a suicide attack by a bomber who was supposed to blow himself up In Jerusalem's Pisgat Ze'ev neighborhood. The explosives meant for the attack included a bag which was to conceal a fire extinguisher packed with three kilograms of explosive and topped with shrapnel.
