Chile: WRATH OF G-D, Fire and Brimstone... and Lightning?

Lightning bolts strike around the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic chain near southern Osorno city June 5, 2011. The volcano in the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle chain, dormant for decades, erupted in south-central Chile on Saturday, belching ash over 6 miles (10 km) into the sky, as winds fanned it toward neighboring Argentina, and prompted the government to evacuate several thousand residents, authorities said. Portugal election: Socialists admit defeat

Labels: » »

Media_httpinreutersco_czvdjIn a much anticipated outcome, Portugal will vote to replace the caretaker Prime Minister Jose Socrates with opposition center-right Social Democrat Pedro Passos Coelho via maxkeiser.com
As his victory became clear, Mr Passos Coelho said he would do "everything possible" to make sure Portugal honoured the terms of the bail-out.
"I want to guarantee to those who are watching us from abroad that Portugal does not intend to be a burden for the future to other countries that lent us the means that we needed today to face up to our responsibilities," he said.
The victorious centre-right Social Democrats (PSD) led by Pedro Passos Coelho are expected to form a majority with the conservative CDS.

The new government must implement a demanding austerity programme as a condition for an EU bail-out. Exit polls gave the PSD between 37% and 42.5% of the vote, ahead of the Socialists who scored between 24.4% and 30%. "These are clear results which the Socialist Party wants to recognise. All the results point to a win for the PSD and a defeat for the Socialists," Economy Minister Jose Vieira da Silva said.

Greeced Drachma

One World... No Borders? FAIL!
It’s difficult to avoid the impression that the euro saga is gradually building up to a messy denouement. This is the view of a number of commentators ranging from Otmar Issing, the former ECB chief economist, who now says Greece is insolvent and should never have joined the monetary union, and Mario Blejer, the former Argentine central bank president who accuses the ECB of running a Ponzi scheme.
The ruling Greek Socialist Party’s own Maria Damanaki, responsible for fisheries in the European Commission, has put the writing on the wall in true Greek fashion by opining that Greece could return to the drachma unless it reaches a deal with its lenders. via marketwatch.com and image via thetrader.se

CNN Poll Shows Highest Support for Israel; Lowest for Palestinians in History

Sympathy with Israel is up from 60% in 2009. While 65% says the U.S. should not take either side in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, 35% say the U.S. should take Israel's side while just 1% favors backing the Palestinians.

The people rally to protest against closing firehouses, and the mayor hears 'Fire Island' and goes to deliver a speech on gay marriage. "Should government permit men and women of the same sex to marry?” he asks. Why not. We've got some empty firehouses they can get married in. A Timeline of the 2010 Flotilla

Labels:

From the YouTube description:
The film, based on findings by the Eiland Team of Experts, breaks down the events of the flotilla using a timeline that alternates between 3D models and footage captured throughout the incident.
The events leading up to and throughout the flotilla incident are recounted in the video, as presented by the team of experts led by Maj. Gen. (res.) Giora Eiland in the IDF's internal inquiry.
The first phase of the operation: The IDF relayed the message that the flotilla ships were in an area of a maritime closure, and offered the ships to transfer their cargo from the Ashdod Port to the Gaza Strip. The Sofia ship did not respond at all, while the other ships responded with refusal and/or profanity.
The IDF forces were divided and each group boarded a different ship. The soldiers arrived at the Mavi Marmara at 4:28 AM, but could not board the ship due to metal objects being thrown at them. After an unsuccessful attempt to board the ship by smaller boats, a helicopter arrived at 4:30 AM with 15 IDF soldiers. The first rope dropped by the helicopters was tied by the demonstrators to the deck of the ship in order to prevent the soldiers' descent.
Soldiers that descended down the second rope were met by 2-4 demonstrators each who wielded knives, axes, and metal poles. The second soldier to descend was shot in the stomach by a demonstrator. The soldiers who were in danger of their lives were forced to use their live weapons. Five soldiers were injured by stabbing, blows and live fire by the demonstrators. Within seconds of boarding the ships, three soldiers were thrown off the deck by demonstrators. The injured were dragged to the hull of the ship.
A reinforcement of soldiers arrived from a second helicopter, which was also attacked by demonstrators, and the soldiers are met with violence when they attempt to access the lower deck of the ship.
At 4:46 AM a third helicopter arrives to the Mavi Marmara, and the two groups of soldiers combine forces on the ship roof and descend to the other parts of the ship, where they are also met with lethal violence, and thus respond with live fire.
Many of the demonstrators enter inside of the ship as the smaller boats arrive at the side of the ship, however some still violently attack the incoming boats and the soldiers respond with live fire.
The Commander of the Special Navy Forces boards the ship, and while evaluating the forces, it is discovered that three soldiers are missing. The missing and injured soldiers are discovered to have been abducted by a number of violent demonstrators, who abandon the soldiers and run back into the ship when fired at.
Two of the injured soldiers jump off the ship so that they can be picked up by the IDF boats. The third injured soldier is on the bow of the boat and slipping out of consciousness. IDF soldiers remaining on the boat come to his aid.
At 5:17 AM the situation is evaluated and some of the findings: live fire was used by demonstrators towards IDF soldiers who were on the ship, including one soldier who descended down the rope and was shot in the abdomen. Live fire by the demonstrators was also aimed at the soldiers on the small Israeli Navy boats next to the Marmara. The first occurence of live fire was that used by the demonstrators. In addition, a gun with emptied magazines was found in the hull of the ship.
IDF forces had boarded the other ships without incident. Treatment and evacuation was carried out for the injured soldiers and demonstrators alike. 38 injured were airlifted, 7 of them soldiers.
The three soldiers who had been attempted to be kidnapped and were taken to the hull of the ship were witness to an argument between the violent demonstrators, and other passengers of the Marmara who asked the violent demonstrators to cease their violent activity.
24 of the injured passengers were diagnosed at the Ashdod Port and treated in hospitals in Israel.
After the operation ended, the ships arrived at the Ashdod Port accompanied by Israeli Naval forces. An intelligence investigation following the flotilla incident found that 40 of the IHH activists previously boarded the Marmara ship from Istanbul before joining the others.
The 8 of the 9 demonstrators killed were members of the IHH or other allied groups. Around half of those killed had declared in front of their families their aspiration to die as martyrs ("shahids"). Footage on the Marmara shows that the violence had been prepared: metal poles and chains were prepared, slingshots, buzzsaws, gas masks, tear gas, bulletproof vests, knives, and more. A briefing had taken place before the IDF had boarded the ship, with the leader of the violent demonstrators telling the group to attack the IDF soldiers at any cost.

30,000 take part in the largest ever annual Celebrate Israel Parade in NYC

Labels: »

NEW YORK — New York's Fifth Avenue is awash in the blue and white of the Israeli flag.
Thousands are marching Sunday in the Celebrate Israel Parade.
Organizers say the annual parade is the largest in the world celebrating the founding of the Jewish state in 1948.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Gov. Andrew Cuomo are among the marchers.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly is keeping a close eye on security. He said his job "is to make sure everything goes well."
Some marchers are carrying signs criticizing President Barack Obama's policy speech on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict last month.
Obama said Israel's boundaries before the 1967 Mideast war should be the starting point for negotiations on future borders.

Naksa Riots

Despite reports that organizers of protests in Lebanon and Syria had cancelled their protests along the Israel-Syria border, hundreds rushed the border today. Though it is clear that not everyone was part of the group that announced the cancellation. In fact, today's events are pretty clearly a Syria-sponsored act.
The Reform Party of Syria has released a statement, in which they say people are being paid $1,000 each to show-up and $10,000 to their families should any of them succumb to Israeli fire.

Quneitra crossing via travelblog.org
The Reform Party of Syria has learned today, from intelligence sources close to the Assad regime in Lebanon, that Syrians storming through the Golan Height next to the Quneitra crossing are Syrian farmers who have migrated in recent years from the drought-stricken northeast Syria to the south. Estimates put the number at 250,000 impoverished migrants.
Information received cite the regime has paid hundreds of these farmers $1,000 each to show-up and $10,000 to their families should any of them succumb to Israeli fire. In Syria, an average salary is about $200 a month and to these impoverished farmers, such a one-time sum can keep them economically afloat for six months.
Such tactic was used in the past by another defunct Ba'ath Party in Iraq, under Saddam Hussein, to pay Intifada-driven Palestinians the sum of $25,000 to their next-of-kin should they die throwing stones. That measure had a worldwide impact and it seems the Assad regime is using the same play from a twin playbook.
...It is obvious, with this action, Assad wants to divert the attention of the world away from his own massacres and brutality that resulted in some 70 deaths yesterday and about 30 today in Jisr al-Shoghour. RPS expects, on the basis of today's success, for these operations of incursions to multiply in scope in the near future for two reasons: 1) Divert the attention away from Assad's barbarism and savageries, and 2) Stand tall again in the eyes of the regime's supporters whose morale has taken quite a beating the last 3 months because of the violence perpetrated by Assad against unarmed civilians.

CHALLAH @ The Jerusalem Post
Syrian television on Sunday reported that four people were killed and 10 injured along the Syria-Israel border in the Golan Heights near Majdal Shams, reportedly from IDF fire. The IDF spokesperson said that the only information it had on deaths on the border were Syrian reports and therefore, it could not confirm the number of people killed or if there were any deaths.
After several hours of clashes, IDF began allowing Red Cross teams access to the Syrian border area in order to evacuate wounded protesters, Channel 10 reported.
Two armed men were identified near the border fence in Kunetra, on the Syrian side of the border, the IDF Spokesman told The Jerusalem Post on Sunday afternoon.
There was no further official information about he identity of the gunmen, or their proximity to the border but a security official suggested that the men could be Syrian police or army forces
Prior to spotting the armed men, according to the IDF spokesperson, around 150 people managed to cross to the Syrian side of the fence, entering a mined zone between the two fences in the Majdal Shams area.
IDF forces were sending Arabic-language messages through loudspeakers over the border, warning that anyone approaching the fence would be killed.
Reuters has confirmed that the Syrians were throwing stones at the IDF soldiers. The IDF reported that the Syrians were tampering with the border fence. In addition there are reports from the IDF of firebombs being thrown by the Syrians.  It should be noted that the deaths have not been confirmed by any independent observers. The IDF are being cautious regarding any reports stating the number of dead.
Update: It looks like the rioters knew exactly what was coming.

Muhammad Shchiber, one of the protestors said, "We knew in advance the security forces added more mines and that they will fire at us but we are determined to return despite the heavy fire."
Here are two videos of the IDF warning the rioters.

In the video on the right the IDF is saying:

Stop! You are breaching an international border. We warn you not to damage security infrastructure. Whosoever attempts to violate Israel’s sovereignty or security infrastructure puts himself in jeopardy. Please return to Syria.
After with the IDF, Brian of London reports:
On the Syrian border the IDF had a three step process:
  1. Verbal warnings in Arabic
  2. Firing in the air
  3. Shoot specific protesters who touch the Israeli border fence in the FEET
In Hebrew the word for foot is a qualified extension of the word for leg so sloppy Hebrew can confuse leg, foot (and even toes). I asked specifically if the IDF Spokesperson meant feet. She said yes: they shot at the feet of protesters.
According to the IDF, Israel had warned Syria via the United Nations.  The IDF is using minimal means to deal with the rioters. IDF prepared to use all means necessary to deal with rioters.
In one incident today, the IDF was asked by the Red Cross for a ceasefire of 30 minutes to evacuate the wounded. The IDF agreed and the Syrians then used the time to attempt to breach the border.  The IDF is again reporting that when they tried to evacuate the wounded, the Syrians attempted to breach the border; they say it is the third time today.
Update:  An anti-tank landmine exploded as protesters attempted to cross into Israel; Multiple injures being reported. The rioters are continuing to approach Israel's border.  Update: According to the IDFSyrian protesters hurled firebombs @ IDF troops, causing fire & leading to explosion of 4 landmines on Syrian side

Update: The rioters have stolen Red Cross signs and are hiding behind them as they try to destroy the border fence.

Update: Syrian state-TV is now reporting that 12 people have been killed and over 225 injured
. Once again, there is no confirmation from an independent observer. Sana (Syrian News Agency) is now reporting that 14 people were killed. In addition, they are claiming that the IDF fired phosphorous bombs. As ElderofZiyon notes:

Needless to say, the story does not show a single picture of a "martyr", of bullet holes in an ambulance, or of any life-threatening injuries.
All of this is highly suspect, but watch to see Western news agencies starting to quote it as if it is true, without qualifications. Or, more likely, the wire services will quote the "death toll" without mentioning the more outrageous claims that make the death count look suspect.
CHALLAH @ Haaretz

Hundreds of Palestinian protesters clashed with Israel Defense Forces soldiers near a key West Bank checkpoint on Sunday, in rallies marking Naksa Day, the defeat of Arab armies by the hand of Israel in the Six-Day War in 1967.
Near the West Bank city of Qalandiyah, between Jerusalem and Ramallah, IDF soldiers were confronted with hundreds of Palestinian protesters, firing tear gas and demonstration dispersal weaponry.
...Palestinians demonstrating near Mount Scopus in Jerusalem hurled firebombs at the back of the Hadassah University Hospital. No one was wounded in the incident and there were no reports of damage.
In Qalandiyah several hundred protesters began marching toward a local checkpoint. Police attempted to disperse those protesters by firing tear gas canisters. 20 protesters were lightly hurt.
CHALLAH @ The Jerusalem Post
Channel 10 reported that protesters threw rocks, Molotov cocktails, and burning tires in the direction of police forces, who responded by firing tear gas and shock grenades. As winds began blowing the gas back at police officers, security forces began firing rubber bullets in an attempt to disperse the demonstration.
Muhammad Khatib, leader of the popular resistance committee in Bilin has been arrested at Qalandiyah.
Channel 2 is reporting that many of the protesters at Qalandia are left-wing activists and not 'real Palestinians.'
Six people were arrested in the eastern portion of Jerusalem for throwing stones at Israeli security forces. 40 people were injured. In the video on this JPOST article, one of the pro-Palestinian protesters says that they have been under occupation for over 60 years! This would mean that Israel's entire existence to her is an occupation; rather than Israel's presence in the territories it gained during the 1967 war.
CHALLAH @ The Jerusalem Post

Inside Jerusalem, demonstrators clashed with border patrols in the neighborhoods of Silwan and Abu Tur, seven people were arrested for throwing rocks.

In Hebron, protesters threw rocks and bottles at a kindergarten in the Beit Hadassah. The children were brought inside and no injuries were reported.

Also in the West Bank, about 40 Palestinians and left-wing activists marched toward the Elon Moreh settlement attempting to break through the village's gates.

Protesters set a small fire, which was extinguished, and were dispersed.

In Ramallah, a 200-person rally was gathered in Manara Square.

Hundreds of Palestinians also marched in commemoration of the "Naksa" in Gaza's Beit Hanun.
