Støre’s terms of endearments

Labels: » » »
Morten Høglund in the Progress Party posed a perfectly reasonable question to foreign minister Støre, namely whether the Norwegian government would demand from both the provisional Hamas-Fatah government, and a future Palestinian government, that it comply with the quartet requirement to a) recognize the state of Israel, b) renounce political violence, and c) commit to earlier agreements.
Støre needed to go to Berlin first and have a meeting with Abbas, but today he finally provided a very brief response.
These are the crucial phrases of his answer, outlining the Norwegian policy toward Israel and the Palestinian authorities.
The government has been – and continues to be – positive to all steps that over time will unite the Palestinian population on the West Bank and Gaza under one rule … when Norway in 2007 chose to cooperate with the coalition government at the time, it was based on a government platform that had adequate references to and respected committed agreements and agreement parties.  This platform was based on a continuation of the principle of armistice … the government sees no reason to repeat this if we consider that these principles are reflected in the new coalition government’s platform. If it doesn’t a new Palestinian government will have difficulty continuing the work with the political, security, and institutional reforms.
In this year’s Yassir Arafat Prize for Irresponsibly Elusive Rhetoric, this is an entry that is sure to win.
What he is trying to say, of course, is:
We will look for any excuse, any pretext, to continue sucking up to anybody who has power among the Palestinians. If they just murmur the word “armistice” under their breath, it will be acceptable to us.
The question isn’t what Norwegian policy is, it’s what it would take to change it. A future Palestinian government can shoot rockets at Israeli civilian targets, teach antisemitism to their children, refuse to accept the existence of the state of Israel, give refuge to international terrorists who want to destroy Europe, steal humanitarian supplies, and obviously impose misogynistic, homophobic “sharia” laws on its citizens. As long as they occasionally make vague reference to something that sort of resembles conciliation and armistice.
They can count on Norway. This is what you call unconditional love.

Why Are Hamas And Fatah Having A Trial Separation?

..."Congratulations--and I never want to see you again!"...
PIECE TALKS BLUEPRINT:
in an interview with Ma'an....Hamas has told Abbas not to bother coming to Gaza--because he may get stoned (by Gazans).
According to Al Ahram's version of the interview, however, Hamas has told their good friends in Fatah that none of them should come into Gaza:

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will not be able to visit the Gaza Strip soon, as the security situation is still fragile, Hamas foreign policy chief Mahmoud Al-Zahar said on Wednesday.
Zahar added in an interview with Maan Palestinian News Agency that the Palestinian faction has succeeded in reaching political reconciliation; however there is no progress on the social reconciliation between the big families in Gaza and the West Bank.
“We will have to work on reconciliation sessions between the well-known families in the West Bank and Gaza that would make the security more stable than now” Zahar said.[emphasis added]
I'd hate to be the social worker in charge of that case.
But according to Zahar, it's not just Abbas who should stay home:

Zahar also added that Hamas would not allow the return of the security officers who used to run Gaza security agency offices before the division in 2007. Hamas also does not agree to re-open Fatah offices in the strip at the current stage and will delegate this task to the Egyptian/Arab committee that will supervise the implementation of the reconciliation deal.
Gee, and they seemed so happy at the signing. via daledamos.blogspot.com

Jonathan Pollard is a Hostage

Jonathan Pollard is a hostage.
Yes. Those are strong words.
But let’s consider the situation today:
We have virtually a wall-to-wall consensus of top American officials who have intimate knowledge of the operation stating now for the record that after serving 26 years in prison, justice requires the immediate and unconditional release of Jonathan Pollard.
On 4 January 2011 Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu publicly and formally apologized for the operation on behalf of the Jewish State and requested that President Obama free Pollard.
There was no response.
On 5 April 2011 President Shimon Peres met with President Obama at the White House and again requested, in the name of the State of Israel that President Obama free Pollard – hand delivering a letter from Pollard in which he expresses remorse for his actions and pleaded on compelling humanitarian grounds to be released.
There was no response.
Senior American officials have confirmed in the past that Pollard is being held by the United States as a “chip” that could be given to Israel in compensation for Palestinian-Israeli final status concessions. In point of fact, Prime Minister Netanyahu already “paid” for Pollard’s release at the 1998 Wye Summit, but then- President Clinton received the payment [the release of Palestinian terrorists] but reneged on his end of the deal, freedom for Pollard.
So here we are.
Justice requires the immediate unilateral release of Pollard, with no quid pro quo.
Pleas from both the Prime Minister and President of Israel to free Pollard have been ignored by President Obama.
And while there is an apparent expectation that in spite of the justice in releasing Pollard after 26 years in prison, America is continuing to hold Pollard until Israel pays some exorbitant, yet-to-be- stated “price”.
If this is the case, clearly this isn’t diplomacy. It is blackmail.
This isn’t the behavior of a trusted ally.
It is an embarrassment which undermines the credibility of the US – Israel special relationship.
It is humiliating for the State of Israel as President Obama appears to show such contempt for the Jewish State, while the rest of the world looks on.
It is the anti-thesis of all that the United States of America claims to stand for. President Obama seems to have turned a blind eye to justice, and to humanitarian compassion, in what appears to be a bid to blackmail an ally.
It is not too late to rectify the situation. nor is it too late to set the record straight, and allow justice to finally prevail.
With literally the stroke of a pen, President Obama can put an end to this travesty of justice and to the apparent blackmail of an ally.
All it will take is stroke of the President’s pen on Pollard’s clemency papers so that both countries may be reassured that Prime Minister Netanyahu is meeting with President Obama the statesman, and not Mr. Obama the blackmailer.
Jonathan Pollard must go free now.

GOP senator: Torture did not lead to bin Laden death. So one man disagrees.

Waterboarding and other harsh interrogation techniques were not a factor in tracking down Osama bin Laden, a leading Republican senator insisted Thursday.

In an impassioned speech on the Senate floor, the Republican said former Attorney General Michael Mukasey and others who back those tactics were wrong to claim that waterboarding al-Qaeda's No. 3 leader, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, provided information that led to bin Laden's compound in Pakistan.
go figure, a rhino in the GOP... it is as if anyone is shocked that there are Ron Paul types and others who do not share the opinions of the American public. Most people involved in government now presently agree that Waterboarding was beneficial to the capture of Osama Bin Ladin
