What is progressive about women who can not cook?

"As a child, our family menu consisted of two choices: take it or leave it."
- Buddy Hackett
Over time, we lost touch with the "family" part of the equation. A few years back, Hillary Clinton illuminated a typical outlook by sneering, "I suppose I could have stayed home and baked cookies." Her attempt to defend pantsuits at the expense of aprons sent a chilling message to parents everywhere. Yet that regrettable kitchen metaphor is fairly typical of the dismissive attitude of many "progressives" towards all things domestic - especially cooking for and eating with children.

Iran Stoning Woman Offered Asylum by Brazil's President Lula

THE GUARDIAN: Offer raises hopes Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning for adultery, will be spared
Brazilian president Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva has stepped into the international outcry over Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning for adultery, by offering his country as a refuge, a move which raised hopes her life will be spared.
The surprise offer prompted an immediate reaction from Iran, which considers Brazil a key ally. Iranian officials softened their tone with Ashtiani's family over the weekend and official media reported full details of the story for the first time.
"I don't think Iran can ignore Brazil as easily as it ignored other countries," Ashtiani's son, Sajad, told the Guardian today. "It is very important that Brazil, as one of Iran's most significant allies in the world, has offered a haven for my mother."
He hoped Turkey, which also carries influence with Tehran, would add its voice. "No countries in the world can have such impacts that Brazil and Turkey can have on Iran now. These two countries can save my mother's life," said Sajad. >>> Saeed Kamali Dehghan, Tom Phillips in Rio de Janeiro, and Rory Carroll | Sunday, August 01, 2010

Peres calls out English Jew Hate

Labels:
while I'm sure part of this is political. Peres is a leftist pointing out the hypocrisy of a Conservative.... part of it is right on!
Shimon Peres said England was "deeply pro-Arab ... and anti-Israeli", adding: "They always worked against us."
Peres is far from the only one in Israel who sees Britain as anti-Semitic.

Yet in Israel, Mr Peres is far from alone in holding such views, which have gained a wider following, particularly on the Right, since the expulsion of an Israeli diplomat over accusations that Mossad sent agents using British passports to assassinate a Hamas commander in Dubai.

Of course, the Telegraph might have mentioned that the Brits had no objections when a group of Russian spies was caught in the US using British passports.... That's precisely the sort of double standard that makes many of us in Israel believe that Britain is anti-Semitic.
But perhaps the funniest line of all is the Telegraph quoting Benny Begin in shock over Peres having made the comment.

Benny Begin, a cabinet minister whose father Menachem was prime minister and before that leader of Irgun, the group that killed 91 people in an attack on Jerusalem's King David Hotel in 1946, said: "Peres? I simply can't believe he said that."

Maybe the Telegraph isn't aware of the historical context for that statement (Peres was David Ben Gurion's chief aide. Ben Gurion and Benny Begin's father were rivals - Ben Gurion led the Haganah and Begin led the Irgun. The rivalry culminated in Ben Gurion ordering Yitzchak Rabin to fire on the Altalena, an arms ship that was trying to bring weapons to the Jewish state to battle the British-backed Jordanians during the War of Independence).

Yes, the Brits have a long history of anti-Semitism and a long history of favoring the Arabs over Israel. It's curious that they suddenly object to having it pointed out.

An Iranian official says some of the most popular cigarette brands are contaminated with nuclear substances when smuggled into the country.
The article linked above, via the Salem News, included the bit about pigs' blood in their headline. It's unclear where that came from -- and where it went.
"Some of the most famous cigarette brands worldwide including Marlboro, which accounts for the bulk of smuggled cigarettes [into the Islamic Republic] are tainted with [hazardous] nuclear materials," Mehr News Agency quoted Mohammad-Reza Madani from the Society for Fighting Smoking as saying on Friday.

Assad: Do not Dare Blame Hizbullah for Hariri Murder

AP Photo 1 day ago From left, Syrian President Bashar Assad, Saudi King Abdullah, Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, and Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri meet at the Presidential Palace in Baabda, east of Beirut, Lebanon, Friday, July 30, 2010.
Goldstone Report... prosecute, but Hariri Murder should be covered up... ok Assad. Care to elaborate?

At a meeting with Lebanese President Michel Suleiman and Saudi King Abdullah, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad called for an immediate end to the activity of the United Nations international tribunal investigating the death of former Lebanese leader Rafik al-Hariri. Assad said that the tribunal had become a “burden” on Lebanon, and threatened the country's stability.
Assad warned the tribunal against finding Hizbullah guilty for Hariri's murder; such a decision could “destroy” Lebanon, he said.

A report in the Lebanese press quoted Assad as warning the tribunal against finding Hizbullah guilty for Hariri's murder; such a decision could “destroy” Lebanon, he said, adding that the tribunal has  “nearly caused a tragedy in the Middle East.” He said that the tribunal had attempted to falsely blame Syria as well. “We cannot accept the same results regarding Hizbullah,” he said. If, at one time, the tribunal was attempting to find the parties guilty for Hariri's death, today it had become a tool by which to persecute countries that were not pro-American, he claimed. Hizbullah top terrorist Hassan Nasrallah is set to make a speech Tuesday, in which he will discuss the investigation.
According to the report, Abdullah said that it was doubtful that the tribunal could be stopped at this point, since it had major international backing. The meeting was seen as an attempt by Assad to deliver a message to Sa'ad Hariri, Prime Minister of Lebanon, with whom Abdullah has close ties. Sa'ad is the son of Rafik Hariri.
