Jews repeatedly attacked regularly in city of Anne Frank

In the land of Anne Frank:

Anti-Semitism has gotten so ugly in The Netherlands that Jews walking along Amsterdam’s street are being harassed by young Muslims who yell insults or give Nazi salutes.
Last Sunday, a Dutch TV channel aired a secretly recorded video that showed a rabbi enduring such harassment, according to a Dutch news report. 
To fight such anti-Semitism, Acting Amsterdam Mayor Lodewijk Asscher has hit upon a novel crime-fighting idea: “Decoy Jews.”
Dutch police “already use people posing as pensioners and gay men in an effort to catch muggers and gay-bashers,” noted DutchNews. So the use of “decoy Jews” represents a new variation of an old crime-fighting tactic.... A country of 16.3 million, The Netherlands’ Muslim population numbers 945,000 or 5.8%.

A TV programme broadcast on Sunday by the Jewish Broadcasting Organisation showed rabbi Lody van de Kamp confronted by Moroccan youths giving the Hitler salute. The footage was recorded with a hidden camera. The rabbi and two school children went to various neighbourhoods in Amsterdam last week and were confronted not only by Hitler salutes but also by verbal abuse.
An earlier radio broadcast by the Jewish Broadcasting Organisation showed that the situation is equally serious in some other parts of the Netherlands, including the city of Rotterdam.

UN 1701: Hezbollah setting up missile launchers in Southern Lebanon is fine, but a floating Premenstrual syndrome is against the rules.

The French ship Mariam, now renamed Julia, which plans to bring female 'activists' to Gaza, has now been cleared to sail to Cyprus. The Lebanese government would not clear the ship to sail directly to Gaza as that would violate UN Security Council Resolution 1701 (please don't ask since when Lebanon is concerned about such things - I've been wondering about that myself). But they did clear it to sail to Cyprus. I'm not sure why they expect Cyprus to clear them to sail directly to Gaza. But they're going there anyway.

Lebanon has given permission for another flotilla to leave Tripoli for Gaza, according to a Beirut minister quoted by an-Nahar Monday morning.
Lebanese Transport Minister Ghazi Aridi said the ship named Julia is now docked at the northern Lebanese port of Tripoli and can set sail once it is cleared by port authorities there. He said the ship would be allowed to sail to Cyprus and not directly to Gaza in order to abide by UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for a full cessation of hostilities by both Lebanon and Israel and forbids any paramilitary activity south of the Litani River.
Aridi said the voyage of the ship, the French-registered Julia, would not violate the terms of the cease-fire resolution. To clear the confusion over the latest Gaza flotilla initiative, Aridi added that while the ship was named Julia, the voyage itself was named Mariam.
He stressed that Lebanon’s government would take full responsibility over the ship’s course, its cargo and the female activists – both foreign and Lebanese – on board.
Israeli UN ambassador Gabriela Shalev warned Friday that the attempt by the organizers to sail from Lebanon and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza could escalate tensions and affect peace and security in the region. She cited in particular the ships' departure from Lebanon which "remains in a state of hostility with Israel." She also cited "a possible link" between the organizers and the Shiite Muslim Hizbullah group.

Potato Batteries May Power The Future

Researchers in Israel have discovered that boiled potatoes can do more than power the body. It can also power a light switch.
According to a press release (PDF format) from Yissum Research Development Company Ltd., the technology transfer arm of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the company has produced a new solid organic electric battery based on treated potatoes.
The press release stated that researchers found out enhancing the salt bridge capability of treated potato tubers can generate electricity. The easy to use power source is being touted as being able to improve the quality of life of 1.6 billion people who currently lack access to electrical infrastructure.
"The ability to provide electrical power with such simple and natural means could benefit millions of people in the developing world, literally bringing light and telecommunications to their life in areas currently lacking electrical infrastructure," Yissum CEO Yaacov Michlin stated in the release.
Scientists discovered that boiling a potato prior to using it in electrolysis increases electric power up to 10 fold over an unboiled potato and lets the battery last for days and possibly weeks. The battery is constructed using zinc and copper electrodes and a slice of potato.
They claim that cost analysis shows the treated battery could generate electricity five to 50 folds cheaper than 1.5 volt D cells. It also stated that the power would be 6 times more economical than kerosene lamps.
The findings were published in the June issue of the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy and this week's Research Highlights section of Nature.
Miniscience.com showed how a battery can be made by a potato. According to the website, batteries generate electricity through a chemical reaction between copper and zinc electrodes as the needed electrodes and a potato as the electrolyte.
The water-soluble chemicals cause a chemical reaction with one or both of the electrodes.
The catch, stated Miniscience.com, is making a battery that can continue to produce more electricity for a longer period of time. A regular potato would create about 1 to 1.5 volts, and usually does not create enough current to turn on a small light.
The website Hothardware.com suggests that the time is right to replace traditional batteries, saying that "the fact that we're still dealing with lead-acid batteries is sort of a baffling thing to wrap one's mind around."
"We won't get our hopes up too high until fuel cells become the viable alternative that we have been told that they are, but we strangely have more faith in a vegetable than a science lab to revolutionize the battery," the website stated.
