Umm, Does Obama Have Any Plan For When Mexico Collapses? | Mere Rhetoric

I only ask because when POTUS was in Mexico he blasted amnesty opponents as "demagogues." I understood that to mean that he didn't seriously credit the historically verified possibility of a post-amnesty illegal immigrant flood. And if he doesn't credit that possibility then he probably isn't thinking much about the very real potential for a refugee crisis in the aftermath of a Mexican collapse. Which is a problem, because Mexico pretty much looks like it's on the brink of collapse.

Between the routine mass murder and the ambushing of military patrols and the stitching of enemies' faces on soccer balls and the dumping of heads in town squares and the hanging of victims from overpasses and the revenge slayings of dead soldiers' entire families and the savage beheadings of women and disabled men and the murdering of investigative journalists and the dissolving of drug rivals in acid, it kind of seems like Mexican authorities don't really have a handle on their country. Which is what you'd expect given that the entire country runs on drug money:

Mexican cartels, which control most of the cocaine and methamphetamine smuggled into the United States, bring an estimated $25 billion to $40 billion into Mexico from their global operations every year. To put that in perspective: Mexico probably made more money in 2009 moving drugs than it did exporting oil, its single biggest legitimate foreign currency earner... drug cash is everywhere in Mexico. It has even propped up the country's banking system, helping it ride out the financial crisis and aiding the country's economy... narco money finds its way onto the books of restaurants, construction firms and bars as drug lords try to legitimize their cash and prevent police from tracing it."Mexico is saturated with this money," said George Friedman, who heads geopolitical analysis firm Stratfor.

Referring to his country's less than innovative agricultural industry, one Cabinet-level Mexican official emphasized that farmers "should follow the example of drug traffickers because they produce what the market demands." Memo to the OED: it's time.

Doc's Talk: Jewish Growth in Judea/Samaria Tops the Charts

The number of Jews in Judea and Samaria has grown to 313,000 – double the growth rate of the rest of Israel – according to the latest Civil Administration report.

The Civil Administration report, as quoted by Haaretz, shows that the population in Judea and Samaria grew in the past half-year by 2.75%, and by 5.1% in the past year, and now stands at 312,940. A large part of the growth is due to the hareidi-religious cities of Beitar Illit (6.3%) and Modiin Illit (9,8%) - but even without those cities, Yesha’s growth rate of 3.8% more than doubles that of the rest of Israel, which stands at 1.7%

Two-thirds of the towns in Yesha grew at a higher rate than the rest of Israel (see below).

MK Yaakov Katz (Ketzaleh), one of the original driving forces in the early years of the settlement enterprise, both as top aide to then-Housing Minister Ariel Sharon and as one of the founding members of Beit El, said it's just another step in the glorious return of the Nation of Israel to the Land of Israel.

“The steeply-climbing number of Jews living in Judea and Samaria joins the 300,000 Jews in the neighborhoods of Jerusalem over the Green Line,” Katz said, “and is proof that the eternality of the Nation of Israel is much stronger than the freeze decrees of a weak prime minister who violates his promises. We guarantee that the hundreds of thousands of Jews in Yesha will continue to multiply and will reach into the millions.”

Ketzaleh noted the disproportionate national contributions of the Yesha population: “The pioneers of Yesha already make up the backbone of the commanding echelons in the IDF, as well as the main educational institutions of the country: the Hesder yeshivot, the pre-military academies, the ulpanot [girls’ yeshiva high school, and the university in Ariel. They are the supporting column of Israeli society. In every generation, G-d gives us heroes who lead us, from the Maccabim, to the pioneers of the Land of Israel of 100 years ago, and up to the settlers of today. These groups are the torch-bearers of the nation’s most internal values: Torah, Nation, Land. They will emerge victorious over the current prime minister and his attempts to humiliate them.”

Israel Matzav: Explosives 'wash up' off Ashdod and Ashkelon

Two barrels of explosives washed up off the coast between Ashdod and Ashkelon on Monday night. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Islamic Jihad, the Fatah Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade and the Nasser Salah al-Din Brigades issued a leaflet in Gaza claiming responsibility for sending three explosive devices to Ashkelon and Ashdod.

A large barrel filled with explosives was found on a beach in the Ashkelon area Monday morning. The beach was closed.

Policemen and bomb disposal experts neutralized the explosives, according to police spokesman Miki Rosenfeld.

A second barrel filled with explosives was discovered later in the day on the shore of the city of Ashdod.

Authorities conducted a controlled explosion on the second barrel. Police were combing the beaches, and nearby areas were closed to the public. Authorities have not discussed a third device.

The Israel Defense Forces, in a statement Monday, said several Palestinian groups had claimed responsibility January 29 for a maritime terrorist attack after the detonation of two sea-born explosive devices about two kilometers (1.24 miles) off the coast of Gaza.

Haaretz adds:

Both barrels, containing between 15 and 25 kilograms of explosives each, were neutralized by police sappers.

Sources in the Southern District police said they believed the barrels, which originated in Gaza, were intended to explode next to a ship or near beachgoers.

Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the barrels.

Police have banned fishing or swimming at the beaches between Ashdod and Zikim today over concerns that there may be additional explosives still in the Mediterranean or on a beach.

Security officials said that terror actions at sea are carried out jointly by Fatah, Islamic Jihad and the Popular Resistance Committees.

As far as is known, Hamas is not directly involved in these actions.

Security officials said the attempted attack was original, but not especially sophisticated, and that attempts by terror groups to perpetrate attacks by sea would continue and increase in the near future.

Large police contingents are to deploy today to search for any additional explosive charges. The operation was ordered by police head of operations Maj. Gen. Bentzi Sao after he held consultations.

The search began last night along the shore, on foot and by air, and was scheduled to resume at dawn today.

Security personnel at infrastructure facilities along the shore were instructed to heighten their level of alertness and to conduct increased patrols.

Police are asking the public to be particularly aware of any suspicious objects, especially at bathing beaches, and to inform the police immediately if they find anything unusual.

The barrel that washed ashore on Ashkelon's Hofit beach was discovered by a fisherman at 11:30 A.M. After he called police the beach was evacuated. It took several hours for sappers to neutralize the explosives, which were taken to a laboratory for examination.

YNet adds:

A senior official in one of the Palestinian organizations said that the devices discovered in the sea near Ashdod and Ashkelon were intended for a terrorist attack on the Ashdod Port and on oil infrastructures in the Ashkelon area.

The source told Ynet that the planned attack was a joint effort by the al-Quds Brigades, Islamic Jihad's military wing, Salah a-Din Brigades, the PRC's military wing and al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, Fatah's military wing. The senior official said that the devices were sent to sea last weekend in response to Israel's crimes.

Someone please remind me what the difference is between Fatah and the other terrorists. Why are we 'negotiating' with Fatah?

Israel Matzav: Israeli Arab MK: If there is no Israel, there will be no churches in the Middle East

Ayoub Kara is a rarity in this country. He's an Israeli Arab MK who gets it. In fact, he's an Israeli who just happened to be born Arab and not an 'Israeli Arab' like the ones I usually describe with scarequotes. There are two reasons for this: He's Druze and not Muslim, and he belongs to the Likud and not to one of the 'Israeli Arab' parties. In fact, Kara often gets it better than his Prime Minister.

Kara gets it about Christians in the Middle East enough that he met with the Pope in Rome last week and tried to explain it to the Pope.

Member of Knesset Ayoub Kara said on Monday that he got the feeling from his meeting with Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican last week that the Catholic Church was behind the pontiff on behalf of the Jewish people. Speaking on Arutz Sheva's Hebrew journal, the deputy minister for development of the Negev and the Galilee said that the pope's speech on International Holocaust Day showed that he knew what happened in the concentration camps.

Kara said that after his meeting with the pope, he had an argument with the Church's representative on the Middle East, who said internationalization of Jerusalem was the optimal solution to the Arab-Israeli struggle over the capital. Kara responded by saying that if there was no Israel, there would be no churches in the Middle East, noting how the Christians of Bethlehem and Nazareth are being treated by their Muslim neighbors. He added that the interest of the Church should be Israeli control, and felt that some of what he said was accepted by the cardinal.

I have my doubts that this Pope gets it about the Holocaust (see canonization of Pope Pius XII and Williamson) but Kara definitely gets it about what would happen to churches in the Middle East if there were no State of Israel. In fact, the number of Christians is increasing in only one country in our region.

You guessed it: Israel.

A sermon calling for the genocide of Jews was broadcast Friday by PA TV, which is under the control of PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas. The speech called the Jews the enemies of God and humanity, and compared Jews to Nazis.In a recent interview with the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Abbas proudly declared that there is no more incitement in the mosques:
“They [Israel] said there is a problem with incitement in speeches in mosques
during Friday prayers. Today there is no more incitement at any mosque,” he

The gulf between modern Muslim and Christian teachings with regard to the “Christ-killer” allegation against the Jews couldn’t be wider.

Lenny Bruce often confronted the deicide or “Christ-killer” allegation in his bold pre-Vatican II act. The comedian would relate how a beleaguered Jew put a note in his cellar, where it could easily be found, to absolve all other Jews. It said: “I did it. Morty.” For weeks, the American media has been inundated with apoplectic diatribes surrounding the unproven, (soon to be disproven?) potential impact of Mel Gibson’s recently released, “The Passion of The Christ” on reviving this now heretical allegation, forty years after Vatican II. Curiously ignored in this overheated discussion is the openly professed, orthodox theological view of Islam and Muslims that the Jews themselves (ala Morty?),  claimed to have killed Christ.
Specifically, Quran 4:157-158 iterates,
“That they [i.e., the Jews] said in boast, “We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah”;- but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not…Nay, Allah raised him up unto Himself; and Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise…
Ibn Kathir (d. 1373), a pre-eminent Muslim historian, theologian, and Qur’anic commentator, provides this elaboration of Qur’an 4:157-158, which emphasizes the Jews overall perfidy, especially their gloating (but unknowingly “false”) claim to have killed Jesus:
“When Allah sent Isa (Jesus) with proofs and guidance, the Jews — may Allah’s curses, anger, torment, and punishment be upon them – envied him because of his prophethood and obvious miracles…the Jews defied him…and tried their best to harm him. Allah’s Prophet Isa (Jesus) could not live in any one city for long and he had to travel often with his mother…Even so, the Jews were not satisfied, and they went to the King of Damascus at that time a Greek polytheist who worshipped stars. They told him there was a man…misguiding and dividing the people in Jerusalem and stirring unrest among the king’s subjects. The king became angry and wrote to his deputy in Jerusalem to arrest the rebel leader, stop him from causing unrest, crucify him and make him wear a crown of thorns. When the king’s deputy in Jersusalem received these orders, he went with some Jews to the house that Isa (Jesus) was residing in, and he was with twelve, thirteen, or seventeen of his companions. That day was a Friday, in the evening. They surrounded Isa (Jesus) in the house, and when he felt that they would soon enter the house or that he would sooner or later have to leave it, he said to his companions, ‘Who volunteers to be made to look like me, for which he will be my companion in Paradise?’A young man volunteered, but Isa (Jesus)  thought that he was too young. He asked the question a second time and third time, each time the young man volunteering, prompting Isa (Jesus) to say, ‘Well, then you will be that man.’ Allah made the young man look exactly like Isa (Jesus), while a hole opened  in the roof of the house, and Isa (Jesus) was made to sleep and ascended to heaven while asleep…When Isa (Jesus) ascended, those who were in the house came out. When those surrounding the house saw the man who looked like Isa (Jesus), they thought that he was Isa (Jesus). So they took him at night, crucified him and placed a crown of thorns on his head. The Jews boasted that they killed Isa (Jesus) and some Christians accepted their false claim due to their ignorance and lack of reason.
In his commentary on the related Qur’anic verse 4:159,
“And there is none of the People of the Book but must believe in him before his death; and on the Day of Judgment he will be a witness against them.”
Ibn Kathir elucidates the Islamic version of the “Resurrection” from the hadith (oral tradition recording Muhammad’s words and actions) in which Isa (Jesus), who is merely a Muslim prophet preaching Islam, returns to “break the cross, kill the pig, and banish the jizyah [Qur’anic poll-tax signifying a non-Muslims subjugation under Islamic rule]  and call all the people to Islam.”
It is critically important to understand that all the essential themes of Ibn Kathir’s narrative regarding the Crucifixion are reiterated in the authoritative contemporary (February 1991 English edition) manual of Islamic Law (‘Umdat al-salik wa’uddat al-nasik), “The Reliance of the Traveller,” which is certified by Cairo’s distinguished Al-Azhar University. In addition, “Reliance of the Traveller” reaffirms the accepted interpretation of Isa’s (Jesus’) return as described in the Qur’an andhadith:
“(T)he time and place for  [the poll tax] is before the final descent of Jesus…After his final coming, nothing but Islam will be accepted from them, for taking the poll tax is only effective until Jesus’ descent…
The modern pronouncements and teachings of the Roman Catholic Church stand in stark relief. For example, Professor Phillip Cunningham (in, “Education for Shalom: Religion Textbooks and the Enhancement of the Catholic-Jewish Relationship,” 1995, p. 39) summarized the principal features of the Second Vatican Council’s “Declaration of the Relationship of The Church to Non-Christian Religions” (Nostre Aetate), issued in 1965, as follows:
“Nostre Aetate rejected key elements of the ancient anti-Jewish tradition. ‘The Jews’ were not guilty of the crucifixion, had not been renounced by God, were not under a wandering curse, and their covenantal bond with God endured.”
Furthermore, despite the fact that Islam categorically rejects the Gospels’ account of the Crucifixion, large segments of the Muslim intelligentsia were infuriated by theNostre Aetate declaration rejecting the charge of deicide against the Jewish people. According to prominent dhimmi cleric advocates of the Islamic viewpoint, such as Youakim Moubarac (in, L’Islam et le Dialogue Islamo-Chretien, Pentalogie Islamo-Chretienne, 1972-1973.), Muslim protestations “against the disculpation of the Jewish people” were lodged in “a perfectly authentic pursuit” of the Qur’an “ for the honor of God and the Virgin.” Moubarac added that Jews were “the principal agent of an entire sinful mankind [and] …blame cannot be placed on this mankind for a deed for which its prime author is absolved.” The historian Bat Ye’or has noted bluntly that the sentiments expressed by Moubarac and his ilk reflect an “Islamic and Christian anti-Judaism [which] mutually strengthened each other in order to torpedo Judeo-Christian rapprochement.”
As a Jew, even an admittedly very secular one, it has been quite reassuring to see the preponderance of devout American Christians fully prepared and willing to mollify any potentially anti-Semitic (especially deicidal) motifs in “The Passion of The Christ,” due in no small part to The Church’s sincere modern teachings. There is no remotely comparable progressive strain evident in the Islamic world. Muslim clerics and regimes, especially in the Near East, vehemently opposed, and continue to oppose, the Vatican II/ Nostre Aetate renunciation of the deicide allegation against Jews. Moreover, basic Islamic theology regarding the deicide allegation, and its ugly related politics, are barely known in the West, due to a combination of profound ignorance, and deliberate, cynical obfuscation. The chasm between modern Muslim and Christian teachings with regard to the “deicide/Christ-killer” allegation against the Jews, as well as the overall conception of Jesus, couldn’t be wider. Religious leaders, as well as elites in government policy, academia, and the media must begin to discuss this asymmetry candidly, as well as its implications for serious, meaningful interfaith “dialogue” between Jews, Christians, and Muslims.
