Merkel Goes Nuclear: We Saved GM In Europe Then They Screwed Us. Where's Our Money? | Mere Rhetoric

Despite that, GM’s board of directors’ gutsy decision to keep Opel within the corporation is good news for the long-term future of the automaker’s U.S. and European operations. But, returning Opel/Vauxhall to a profit will require thousands of layoffs and possible plant closings.

Tony Woodley, joint leader of Unite, the union, said the decision was “fantastic”, adding: “There is no logic in breaking up the company. I believe it is the right decision for Britain and our plants.”

He called on Lord Mandelson, the Business Secretary, to demand that GM give guarantees about future production.

Germany’s government estimated job losses of 10,900 under the sale of Opel/Vauxhall to Magna.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman, said in a statement early Wednesday that the government expects GM to repay on time EUR1.5 billion in bridge financing meant to keep Opel afloat. That financing is due to expire Nov. 30.

In May, the German government pledged to help fund Opel with EUR4.5 billion, but suggested the financing was meant to support the bid to sell a majority of Opel to Magna and its Russian banking partner, Sberbank (SBER.RS).

"Without our involvement there would be no Opel today," Merkel told the Frankfurter Allgemeine (FAZ) daily in an interview to be published on Saturday. "We secured Opel's chances of survival." With US parent company GM struggling to survive, Germany gave Opel a "bridging loan" of 1.5 billion euros (2.2 billion dollars) to keep it running and Opel's 25,000 German employees, half the European total, in a job. In September, GM signed a preliminary deal to sell a majority stake in Opel, a deal backed by the German government with three billion euros in state loan guarantees, but last month GM decided not to sell after all. With Merkel having invested considerable political capital in securing the deal, Berlin was not amused. It is now demanding that GM pay back the money. "Now that the final decision has been taken, GM now has to pay back the bridging loan ... It has now taken over the responsibility of financing Opel itself," Merkel told the FAZ.

You'll be glad to know that GM's European spokespeople were pretty cocky about repaying the loan: "if we're asked, GM will repay the bridge loan in question." Sure it's infuriating to see them being generous with US taxpayer money as a way of brushing away their own incompetence. But (a) they're already bragging about paying back US taxpayer debts with money from US taxpayers and (b) they already gave $1 billion in bailout money to Brazil. Given how much Brazil's been flirting with Iran, it'd be churlish not to throw some money toward a reliable ally like Germany.

General Motors (NYSE:GRM) has opted to keep the European business Opel after a year of uncertainty and high-stakes political negotiations.

Now its clear that, GM was never keen on the deal with Canadian Mr. Stronach’s Magna International (TSE:MG.A) and his Russian partner Sberbank– it was forced into the decision by the Germans with the promise of $6.58 billion in state aid.

The proposed sale to Magna had threatened more than 10,500 jobs across Europe.

But GM said they had decided to keep Vauxhall and European car business Opel and “move forward with restructuring the business”.

Canadian multi-millionaire Frank Stronach’s lifelong dream of owning his own carmaker has been shattered for the second time in two years.

Israel Matzav: What has been guaranteed to Israel

Over the weekend, 'moderate' 'Palestinian' President Mahmoud Abbas Abu Mazen called for the UN to endorse a 'two-state solution' based upon the June 4, 1967 borders between Israel and Jordan and between Israel and Egypt. I have pointed out many times that UN Security Council Resolution 242 does not call for a return to the 1949 armistice lines that were in effect on June 4, 1967. Rick Richman does a good job of summing up the promises that have been made to Israel regarding its eventual permanent border.
The Roadmap calls for final-status negotiations in Phase III “based on UNSCR 242.” It does not mention the June 4, 1967, lines, much less endorse them as “borders.” The U.S. has at least three times formally assured Israel of “defensible borders” as the outcome of the peace process: (1) in the January 16, 1997, letter from Secretary of State Warren Christopher to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu; (2) in the April 14, 2004, letter from President George W. Bush to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon; and (3) in the January 16, 2009, Memorandum of Agreement between the U.S. and Israel. Only such borders meet the Resolution 242 requirement that Israel’s borders be not only recognized but also secure.

Goldstone Sent 13-Year-Old Boy to Prison for Protesting Apartheid

1986: Goldstone sends 13-year old boy to jail for protesting apartheid

And you thought Richard Goldstone was a champion in the fight against apartheid. Well, not always.
In the most poignant case, Goldstone ruled against the 1986 appeal of a 13-year-old boy who had been sentenced to jail for disrupting school as a protest against apartheid and increasingly draconian "emergency laws" used to preserve order and squelch opposition to the government. Goldstone, according to The New York Times, provided no comment to his decision to uphold the sentence of the lower court.

Richard Goldstone is one of today's most renowned names in human rights jurisprudence and international law concerning war crime. Already well known in human rights circles by the time he served as chief prosecutor for the United Nations International Criminal Tribunals for Yugoslavia and Rwanda in the mid-1990s, Goldstone's esteem only increased as he carried out his role as a UN prosecutor.

But prior to his work for the international court, Goldstone cut his judicial teeth on the bench of South Africa's Supreme Court under the apartheid regime. During this period between 1980 and 1989 -- some of apartheid South Africa's most violent years -- Goldstone ruled on cases which pitted human rights against South African statutory law, legal precedence, and judicial convention.

In a similar case that year, Judge Goldstone ruled against two appellants who had been convicted for possession of a cassette tape that had a recording of an interview with Oliver Tambo. Tambo, along with Nelson Mandela, was a founding member of the ANC Youth League and later served Secretary General of the ANC itself.

The case, brought before the Transvaal Provincial Division of the Supreme Court, on which Goldstone sat, centered on whether the two young men had attempted to disseminate the tape on behalf of the ANC, thereby violating the Internal Security Act No. 74 of 1982 -- a piece of legislation that some human rights scholars have called a crucial weapon in the regime's "arsenal of terrorism legislation."

Goldstone commented in that case that Mr. Tambo's opening words on the recording indicated "beyond a reasonable doubt that the cassette in question was published or disseminated under the direction or guidance or on behalf of the African National Congress," -- a fact that, in Golstone's opinion, was sufficient basis to uphold the convictions of the two young men.

According to the Supreme Court ruling on the case, other key subversive phrases made by the ANC leader on the recording included an encouragement to the people of South Africa to resist the apartheid regime, and Mr. Tambo's call to "let us change our own country into the kind of society we want it to be."

Goldstone's comment that the two young men had acted as agents of the ANC was later cited by the higher appellate court as reason to once again uphold the convictions.

The case of the 13-year-old boy Goldstone ruled against came in the context of a wave of national protests and school disruptions by South Africa's black youth against apartheid and the brutal emergency laws. Authorities responded with mass detention of children who participated in the protests, or were suspected of doing so. By the fall of 1985, at least 800 students had been detained. By December of 1986, South African security officials admitted to having detained more than 1,800 teenagers, while reports surfaced that policemen routinely whipped children at their school desks if they were suspected of supporting the anti-apartheid protests.

Goldstone was slammed by South African human rights organizations for his 1986 ruling against the boy. In a later interview with The New York Times' Bill Keller (who called Goldstone a "cross between King Solomon and Ghostbusters"), the South African judge said about his ruling against the boy that the emergency laws left him "no way out."

But criticism of Goldstone has not been limited to decisions made during his tenure on the bench of apartheid South Africa's Supreme Court. South African journalist and historian R.W. Johnson wrote in an October, 2009 piece that Goldstone had made serious ethical breaches in his capacity as chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia (ICTY).

During preparation for the trial against former Yugoslavian military commanders, according to Johnson, Goldstone was informed by higher-ups that if he did not secure an indictment by November, 1994, he would not receive budgetary funding for the following year. Goldstone quickly moved to indict the only person there was evidence against, even though Goldstone admitted that the defendant "wasn't an inappropriate first person to indict."

Johnson, in his piece, "Who Is Richard Goldstone," noted that the indictment "was so inappropriate that the judges in The Hague passed a motion severely censuring Goldstone."

Goldstone has become the center of controversy in recent months regarding his report to the UN Human Rights Council following a fact-finding mission he led into Israel's 2008 Operation Cast lead, later known as the Gaza War. The report, which has been praised by some but heavily criticized by others, is being considered by the UN Security Council.

I run into hostile students who argue, no, lecture me about the poor Palestinians. Most American students who agitate for the genocidal Arabs are pretty ignorant about history, about Jewish history, about simple facts, but the Swedes are not only ignorant, they spout, get this, Stalinist propaganda, and I feel like I'm in some time warp from the 1930's.
I realize that European socialism is alive and well and anti-Zionism is just a convenient front for some pretty vicious Jew-hatred. No wonder all my Jewish/Swedish friends are planning to making aliyah, all of them repeating the same mantra: “There is no future for Jews in Sweden.”

Today, 11-22-09, a beautiful sunday, at Ipanema beach in Rio de Janeiro, more than 5000 people gathered to protest against the visit of iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Brazil. Jews, gays,a few muslims, baha'is,women and blacks protested and marched along the avenue singing and shouting words. At the end many balloons were released from a cage symbolizing human rights wich are not respected in Iran.

taxing college and professional students at CMU?

You don't need to be a Republican to realize how bad a plan it would be for Pittsburgh to chase students away with taxes to the government. We all know how expensive college was... and most of us here have a hard time paying our loans back as is. Further government loans seem to just enable colleges to hike up the price of tuitions, but here is a fee I never saw coming. they should be making incentives for bringing business and hence jobs to the city. Instead the plan is now to chase it away.

http://www.cmu.edu/alumni/images/sgovttaxemail.pdf

"Local government officials are in the process of approving an operating budget for fiscal year 2010. Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl has proposed taxing college and professional students for the privilege of receiving an education in the city. The proposed tax will charge students in the city at a rate of 1% of their yearly tuition - which, at Carnegie Mellon, would mean roughly a $400 tax on most students."

Hugo Chavez jumps the shark

The President of Venezuela has just praised Robert Mugabe, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and, wait for it, Idi Amin – even if he was a cannibal.
Oh, and Carlos the Jackal too. Can’t forget him. Selfless fighters against imperialism, all of them.
Lordy, what a lunatic blowhard Chavez has turned out to be. Inflation is soaring in Venezuela (something which is entirely the fault of capitalism, you understand) and they and Columbia are close at war. Sounds like things are going just great there.

Daled Amos: UN Cannot Unilaterally Declare A Palestinian State Because Of--The UN

For them the real sticking point has to do with borders, which the PA quite obviously intends to set as the Green Line (everything that was not under Israeli control before the Six Day War of 1967).

If the SC were to accept "Palestine" as a member state, does this mean it would be sanctioning or endorsing those borders as unilaterally claimed?

If the answer is yes, this would mean setting up a conflict with SC Resolution 242, which, basically, says that Israel does not have to withdraw from all territories acquired in 1967, and is entitled to safe and recognized borders that are arrived at via negotiations. And Israel does not have to pull out of any territory until this negotiation occurs. The Green Line is not considered a safe border -- strategic depth is required. (This sets foolish Obama's statement about settlements not bringing security into conflict with this resolution as well.)

The concern is that the PA is seeking to overturn or override this resolution.

The Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs held a conference on 242 a couple of years ago (I was in attendance and learned a great deal). For detailed information from that conference see:

http://www.jcpa.org/JCPA/Templates/showpage.asp?DBID=1&LNGID=1&TMID=84&FID=452&PID=3111

True, the Arab has always claimed that UN Resolution requires Israel to withdraw from all of that territory, but there is abundant proof that is not the case--including what the authors of the resolution themselves have written.

"According to the Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States of 1933, there is a basic “definition” of a state, which has been adopted by the international community. In order to qualify as a state, an entity must:

[] have a permanent population
[] have a defined territory
[] be under the control of its own government
[] have the capacity to enter into relations with other states"

YID With LID: Financial Meltdown Brings Out Global ANTISEMITISM

The following is a snapshot of the global anti-Semitic reaction that has emerged as a result of the ongoing financial crisis as compiled by ADL:

  • United Kingdom: The Web site of the mainstream British newspaper, The Independent, featured in its comments section a post by a visitor identifying himself as "Errol Flynn" that repeated the claim about the alleged $400 billion transfer from Lehman Brothers to Israeli banks. In response to a second article on the economic crisis, another reader commented, "So the banks used to be Jewish-owned has anything changed?" Both posts were eventually removed by the site's administrators.
  • Russia: The Web site of Pravda newspaper published an article arguing that French, German and Italian leaders are advocating a bailout of European banks to benefit "Rothschild, Kuhn Loeb, and other banking magnates," a reference to well-known Jewish banking families. The article continued, "The trouble is most of Europe is sick of their Zionist puppet governments, the wrecking of the universities and the flood of third world immigration. Another Hitler, running a united Europe, could be elected in a heartbeat."
  • Germany: Some discussion forums and blogs made casual linkage between the crisis and Jews or repeated anti-Semitic stereotypes of the "money-savvy" and "financially dominating Jew." One comment on Ariva.de, an independent provider of financial news, stated: "When it comes to money Jews are always in the say."
  • Spain: Op-eds making reference to Jews and the financial crisis appeared in diario El Pais. While the articles did not directly accuse Jews of causing the crisis, the comments section following the articles contained several anti-Semitic entries. One writer declared, "The crisis is not a financial problem but an economic one it is what is behind this gruesome scene of savage capitalism of the Zionist students of Milton Friedman." Additionally, several financial Web sites featured articles with anti-Jewish themes, including one stating that "Lehman's management board is made up of Jews who were only interested in results no matter at what price." (Cincodias.com).
  • Venezuela: The host of a virulently anti-Semitic radio program claims that the fact that the U.S. Congress recessed for the Jewish High Holidays after voting on the $700 billion bailout proposal was evidence "that the U.S. government is controlled by the Jewish lobby."

Report: Iran 'bought' Solomon Island vote against Israel

Iran is bribing friendly countries to Israel to abandon it and vote against the Jewish state in the UN, a report obtained by the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem reported.

According to Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, the report said the Iranian foreign minister met with the foreign minister of the Oceania nation Solomon Islands last year and promised him a check in the amount of $200,000, along with technological aid.

These incentives were meant to come in exchange for an end to the nation's support of Israel.

Shortly after the offer was made the Solomon Islands' foreign minister visited Tehran.

Michael Ronen, Israel's ambassador to the Solomon Islands, said in response to the Yedioth report that "Israelis very active in nurturing its relations with countries in the region".

"We don't believe in conditions and we don't offer money in exchange for support" Ronen added. "We offer mainly humanitarian support, in order to stress that we are a positive power in the region."

He added that small states will always be tempted by cash donations. "Iran won the support of the Solomon Islands for $200,000. I won't offer $250,000 to overturn the decision. Israel does not buy support for money," Ronen said.

"The Solomon Islands have never been supportive of Israel. It has never been against us but has always refrained or been absent from votes. Israel also has a lot of friends here in the press and the social sector, but we won't threaten them to remove our support," he added.

The public in the Solomon Islands and the media, which reject ties with Iran, will do this and the local government will pay with public opinion."

The Solomon Islands is a very poor nation made up of 990 islands inhabited by 600,000 residents.
